Beschreibung

An exceptionally large tapestry with a depiction of a genre. Probably Brussels, late 19th/20th century.

Provincial depiction framed in a wide border lavishly decorated with various blossoms and foliage. The typical genre depiction shows the viewer an outdoor scene as it probably could have taken place in the countryside in the 19th century. In the foreground 4 men are sitting at a table with drinks. A woman and a man are standing behind them, offset to the viewer’s left, and are observing the scene. They are standing in front of a house with a shop sign on the gable. Presumably it is the landlord and his wife in front of their tavern. In the background the view goes into the distance with first 2 cows on the pasture and behind them an indicated building at the foot of a mountain. From the right half of the picture a large oak tree with numerous leaves grows into the detail. It occupies the upper 2/3rds of the image up to the upper edge of the picture.

No mark with indications of origin or maker present.

Dimensions:

345 cm high x 121.5 cm wide / 135.82 inch high x 47.83 inch wide.

Highly decorative piece with various minor damages present (see photos).
