Beschreibung
Large antique wine press or grape press made of solid oak. Probably dating from the 19th century. An extremely decorative piece of German wine culture, crafted using traditional artisanal techniques.
A free-standing oak frame consisting of two tall, solid side panels, connected by cast-iron bolts to a heavy base plate at the bottom and a large beam at the top. Between them are two wooden spindles, surrounded by boards in which the grapes were collected for pressing. Gutters running in the base plate lead to the central drain hole for the extracted juice.
Beautiful details include the decorative flat floral and ornamental carvings on the front, as well as the name of the original owners immortalised on the cornice beam, presumably with a property/cellar mark as an identification feature and proof of ownership for what was, at the time, an extremely expensive investment.
